Department of Finance and Deregulation (Finance) imageWe offer diverse and comprehensive introduction into the public service with twelve months of training and development activities as well as real work. This program is developed to equip our new graduates with the skills and knowledge to become high-quality Finance employees and to underpin their future careers within Finance and the Australian Public Service (APS).

What do we do?

As one of the Australian Government's central agencies, Finance plays an important role in assisting the Government to achieve its objectives in a wide range of policy and program areas. Finance's role is to help the Government shape and deliver its agenda. If you think that we are only interested in accountants and economists to work on the Federal Budget - then think again - that's not all we do! We have a diverse range of business areas and opportunities including public policy development, financial analysis and mangement, providing services to our Parliamentarians, property and construction management, asset sales, reducing the regulatory buden on Australian Businesses, ICT and legal advice.

We take all degrees!

We employ students from all degrees and disciplines. If you have a degree in accounting, actuarial studies, architecture, arts, business, commerce, economics, engineering, information technology, law, project management, politics or social science - the Finance Graduate Program could be for you. Our minimum requirements are that you have completed an undergraduate degree (with a credit average grade) within the last 5 years and you must be an Australian Citizen and be willing to relocate to Canberra.

Learning and development

Finance offers a graduate program with a learning and development pathway that is structured to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to become a high quality Finance employee; and to establish a strong foundation to build your career within the APS. This pathway includes optional second and third year components.

Your graduate year focuses on leaning and development related to working at Finance and in the APS. You will have the opportunity to develop a customised training program with your supervisor, tailored to your individual needs. The program also includes a Mentor Program, networking sessions with the other central agencies, and key events such as meeting the portfolio Ministers and a Leadership Offsite.

Participating in the second year program will further enhance your skills, in particular, preparing you for future leadership roles within the Department. Components include career coaching sessions and a leadership program; a certificate IV or Diploma course; and external training courses.

A third year program (optional) is available if you want to complete a formal qualification through Finance’s Postgraduate Study Program. It also involves further leadership development.

Work in the Nation's Capital

If you’ve never visited Canberra, or the last time you did was for a school excursion you probably need to broaden your view of Australia’s capital! Canberra has all the essential services of a bigger city and is close to both the snow and the coast. Finance recruits up to 50 graduates per year, so if you are relocating from another city, you will have plenty of people to explore Canberra with. There is no shortage of things to do in Canberra. You will be kept busy (for at least your graduate year) exploring the many cafes, restaurants, museums, bars, wineries, bike paths and parks...the list is endless!

We understand that moving away from friends and family is a major life change, so we aim to help make the move as smooth as possible. We provide our inter-State graduates with relocation assistance and three weeks temporary accommodation while you find your own place.

Support Networks

At Finance we want to give you as much support as we can to help you settle in. Some of the networks we provide are:

  • Buddies – before you commence in January, we will pair you up with a current graduate. Your buddy can help answer any questions about starting work and show you around when you arrive.
  • The HR Services Team – we will assist you with your relocation to Canberra as necessary and support and guide you throughout the year.
  • Learning and Development Liaison Officer – each business group has a Learning and Development Liaison Officer as a central point of contact and support for graduates.
  • Your Team – some teams in Finance are small while others can be quite large. Within your team you will have a supervisor who can support you in your day-to-day work.
  • Mentor –someone more senior within the Department who can you guide you with your learning, development and career progression at Finance.
