Graduates in the Department help shape the country’s communications by:
- developing policy in relation to the National Broadband Network
- working on the switchover to digital television
- advancing community understanding of online security issues
- seeking improvements for communication services in regional, rural and remote Australia
- gathering public input to strengthen the quality of our national broadcasters.
What to expect as a new employeeYou will work closely with senior staff and develop valuable contacts building a profile across the Department as well as gain valuable experience working on a variety of initiatives.
The Department is situated at the heart of government activity—close to Parliament House, surrounded by key organisations and agencies, and working closely with the Minister.
Your first year program includes:
- one-week orientation
- three diverse and challenging workplace rotations
- experience across a wide range of policy, administration and program work
- a comprehensive training schedule
- support from successful former graduate recruits.
On completion of the program, you are guaranteed permanent employment in the Department and opportunities for career progression.

Eligibility: Applicants will have already graduated or will graduate in the year of application. They must have:
- Australian citizenship or
- permanent residency and submitted an application for citizenship.
