Who are we?
Defence industry is a growing part of the Australian economy and integral to the network that supports the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It consists of a diverse group of employers including large defence companies and hundreds of small to medium enterprises.
What do we do?
Defence industry designs, builds and maintains the equipment used by the Australian Defence Force and by other Defence Forces overseas.
Our industry spans four major sectors:
· Maritime – covering the construction, modification, repair, refit and maintenance of naval surface and sub-surface vessels;
· Aerospace – covering assembly and through life support for a range of helicopters and aircraft used by the Navy, Army and Air Force;
· Land– covering manufacture, assembly and through life support for a range of light armaments, ammunition and military vehicles; and
· Electronics – centering on systems integration and software development to support a range of weapon systems and weapons platforms, but extends to the manufacture of niche capabilities in areas including mobile communications, underwater acoustics and radar.
Who are we looking for?
We are always looking for people with qualifications from a wide range of disciplines. These include:
· Scientific research and development
· Engineering – aeronautical, industrial, electrical, electronic, mechanical, software, chemical and mechatronic etc.
· Naval architecture
· Project management
· Business and commercial acumen
· Technical trades – mechanics, welding, electrical, fitters, metal workers etc.
· Information and communication technology
It’s all about opportunity!
The industry provides many opportunities that are not available in other sectors, including working in roles that are not available to ADF technicians such as deeper maintenance, overhaul, rebuild and design.
Depending on your area of expertise, you could be developing or working with advanced technologies for combat aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicles, building new ships and submarines, or assembling and maintaining new helicopters.
As an employee of defence industry, you may also I have the opportunity to work on both military and commercial projects, travel and gain experience in parent companies around the world, and have the flexibility to pursue work opportunities in capital cities or regional areas across Australia
Defence industry is a unique, high tech sector that offers a diversity of career pathways. Over the next four years, thousands of additional people will be required to work on new projects from submarines and ships to communication and simulation systems.
