Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for time and your advice. I'm sure it's really appreciated by all here.

Just a few questions:
1. Why should a student nearing graduation pick Accenture over other management consulting firms, such as BCG or Bain?
2. In terms of extracurricular activities, what are you looking for? Some of my experiences including being a summer intern at two of the Big 4 accounting firms, as well as being a Managing Director and a Mentor in the Young Achievement Australia Program, which I believe Accenture has sponsored. Are these the sorts of things you are looking for? What other type of activities would you look upon favourably?
3. Although interpersonal and communication skills are important for most jobs, would you say that they are especially important for Management Consulting?
4. Would graduates have much face to face client interaction in the first few years?

Thanks once again for your help and assistance Daniel. Apologies if I've bombarded you with too many questions!

Thanks Daniel,

Your response is what I was worried about. I take one class per week mainly online and it won't interfere in any way with my day to day full time career aspirations. Actually over 90% of the students in my class are part time and are able to manage challenging careers, family and MBA commitments successfully. Your comment about combining a graduate program with evening studies is also interesting considering you’re looking for high performing graduates that love being challenged. I would have thought that attending an evening class instead of watching TV fits your criteria. To say I should focus on one task alone shows me that you don’t fully understand the MBA program as well as its flexibility.

Hi Daniel,

I was wondering if Accenture offered any specific programs (either vacation of graduate) for students with a legal background.

Cheers,

David

Thanks for your questions.
1. When you are choosing a graduate employer you should really do your research and find out what you value in a role and what will be a good fit for you. One reason you may want to work for us is the sheer breath of what we do at Accenture, we work with a wide range or clients and across a wide cross section of industries. We can also provide a wide ranges of services and due to our size we have easy access to cutting edge innovation and ideas that we can leverage to help our clients in all areas of their business. So what differentiates us from some of our competitiors is that we can provide an end to end service and that is exciting for a grad as it increases your chances of being exposed to interesting work.

2. all extracurricular is good, however evidence that you have used your own initiative to build your skills outside of your university learning is good. Volunteering is also a good one so is vac work and internships. We look for well rounded graduates that can adapt to changing situations so if you can demonstrate that you have actively sought out activities that challenge you then that is good too. As we look for high performers any evidence of high performance should be highlighted.
3. Intepersonal skills are key in Consulting as you are often speaking to people about things they don't have a great understanding of. You deal with people of all levels on a client site so need to be able to effectively communicated your solution to the client. If for instance you are delivering training on a solution you need to be able to communicate to your audience in a way that they understand so you have to have very strong interpersonal skills
4. Graduates at Accenture are on client sites as soon as they leave there initial two week training course, so have client interaction from early on in their careers

Dmeng thanks for your questions. We don't have a legal graduate programme however we do have a sizable team of in- house Lawyers. These roles are all advertised as experienced hire roles on our careers website.

We welcome applications from law graduates for our consulting scheme as we feel you have the analytical skills neccesary to be succesful in Consulting so I would encourage you to think about a career in consulting

Daniel

Do you have any information about career progression at Accenture. I'm currently seriously considering applying for a finance grad position and want to know if anything sets Accenture apart from the other big companies in australia. Any feedback in terms of how graduates progess through the company would be great.

Hi Allan,

Career progression can be swift at Accenture. There is no time elligibility for promotion in Consulting at Accenture it is solely based on your performance so you can progress very quickly through the career levels if you are a high performer. Our entry level role is the role of the Analyst and graduates can spend anything between 1 year to 3 years her before being promoted to Consultant, all individuals at Accenture are rated against their peers.

Hi CSB,

It's more that we would like to promote some sort of work life balance, Consulting can be an very demanding career both in terms of time and your intellect and an MBA is a demanding program, maybe not in terms of teaching hours but it is a large undertaking. We can not always promise that you will be working in your home location or that you will be working 9- 5 hours so we would encourage that in the inital stages of your career you focus on one large task at a time. We actively encourage further study and we have many employees that have done their MBA or are doing it. It is essentially your descion however this is our reasoning behind saying that you shouldnt get into the graduate programme whilst still studying for your MBA

Thanks

I understand that progression is solely down to individual performance, but it's nice to know that it usually lasts 1-3 years at Accenture. This has been really useful,
Thanks

Thanks Daniel,

I believe strongly within myself that juggling the initial stages of a career along with the completion of my MBA will not be a problem for me. However, starting a career in consulting is the most important thing for me right now and I would even consider putting the MBA on hold for the moment to get my career started. Sorry if my last post came across a little bit rude but I do feel strongly in what I can achieve. One thing the MBA has given me is confidence in my own ability.

I look forward to filling out the application and I hope that I have what it takes to be successful with Accenture.

Regards,

Chris
