Hi Wasif, you would already be a perm employee of Telstra and we try and match the grads to their preferred area of choice eg Treasury, Audit, Credit. Grads also have the right to apply for any vacancy within Telstra if they realise Finance is not for them.

after 18 months does anything change? or do graduates get moved into an appropriate department and have their job title changed?

What sort of salary can graduates expect at Telstra? Is there a significant pay increase after 18 months? I realise that it all depends on what each employee brings to the table but some ball park figures would be useful.

Thanks Chris, I'm finding this very useful.

Hi Wasif,
After the 18 months, your title will change depending on what position you move into. You will no longer be titled a 'graduate'. In regards to graduate salaries, we pay between 50 - 60K per annum for graduates and once you exit the program in 18-24 months you may be getting paid anywhere between 65 - 80K. Hope this addresses your questions.
Also, Telecommunications is the 2nd highest paying industy behind Mining. So rememeber it's not what you can earn today, it is what you could be earning in 5-10 yrs time!!

That's a good package!
So how long do graduate starters at Telstra stay in the company on average. I read that the average time anyone stays in Telecoms is 3 years. And I think this may be even less for Finance and IT. Do many graduates at telstra stay at the company and build their career there?

Hi Wasif,
That is a good question! We are quite lucky at Telstra that a lot of graduates to stay on and carve out really successful careers. Of course we are going to loose some grads along the line which is inevitable in today's society! The way Telstra is able to hold on to it's grads is by offering so many opportunites that you can literally have different careers within the one company.

Hi Chris,

I am in my 2nd year at UNSW and would like to get vacation work next year, do you look upon this advantagous when recruiting for Telstra? Does Telstra have any vacation roles that are still open?
Really I'm looking at working my way into a finance position and would be very interested in any experience that I can get.

Hi Chris,

Firstly thanks for taking the time to talk to all of us.

I am currently an IT student on break until 2011 at QUT in Brisbane. I am studying networking. I spent the past year working on a HelpDesk at a company called SkyMesh. *EDIT* - I am a Networking Major

I am interested in working at telstra when I graduate. I have lots of customer interaction experience (I have worked as a waiter/bartender for 6 years as well as doing helpdesk part time while I was at uni earlier in my degree).

I really want to know what to expect from telstra when applying for a job. How are the interviews organised, how many rounds are there, things like that.

In the event that we get a position with the company, What is expected of us in the initial 18 months, what responsibilities do we have and what kind of formal training is avaliable in that time?

After the initial 18 months what kind of opportunities to be promoted, change departments, recieve further education, or apply for higher level positions would we expect to encounter and with what kind of time frame?

Sorry for so many questions, I hope to hear back from you,

Regards,

Paul Rosenow

Hi Sammie,

Obvioiusly having vacation work on your CV will benefit you during the selection process. Unfortunately for yourself, the majority of Finance grad positions and vacation work are based in Melbourne. There may be a chance to at least get some work experience at Telstra over summer. You can email telstragradprogram@team.telstra.com to ask the question. Cheers, Chris

Hi Paul,

A lot of thought has gone into your questions which is great.

If you apply for the Telstra Grad Program, you will go through a few stages of selection. Namely, application screening, online cognitive test, phone screen, assessment centre, ref checks and then final interview. It sounds daunting but it is not that bad I promise!

We expect our grads to hit the ground running and give them real responsibilities from day 1. You will be provided with on the job training and also additional qualifications/courses if necessary eg CCNA. You also receive a support network which consists of a buddy & mentor plus your manager.

All grads go through bimonthly group development workshops as well.

After the 18 months the opportunities are endless! It depends how high you want to aim and how determined you are to succeed. All Telstra vacancies are internally advertised so no one will hold you back. However, we like our employee’s to be in a position for 18 months before moving on. We also subsidise further training if it relates to your role eg we don’t subsidise dance or cooking classes!

Hi Chris,

Thankyou so much for your reply, its great to have this information avaliable.

You mentioned earlier work experience, what kinds of positions are avaliable to IT students that you know of? Or would you reccoment I contact the e-mail address you listed earlier?

In the interview stages, does previous work experience count heavily towards applicants? Obviouslly good grades would increase the chance of gaining a position, but if my grades were average (but still credit or higher GPA) could this kind of experience give me an edge? Or would you still be inclined to hire someone with better grades and no work experience?

I guess I just want to know what to expect from the entire experience, as it sounds like the work environment is highly productive and allows for professional development, which is great.

Thanks again,

Paul Rosenow

Hi Paul,

Please contact the email address telstragradprogram@team.telstra.com so I can make sure I best answer your first question.

Work experience is great to have on your CV and will hold you in very good stead. At Telstra, we are mindful that not all graduates have had the chance to gain work experience in their area of choice so we don’t just screen out applications purely on not having work experience. We look at the complete package of each applicant eg qualifications, GPA, work exp, leadership exp, and extra-curricular involvement.

I hope this answers your question.

Regards,
Chris
