Hi Adele,

I'm Thomas from Melbourne, I'm currently applying for my permanent residency. I wonder if it is still possible for me to apply to Orica.
Thank you.

Best regards,

Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Unforunatley not. Our program requires PR at the time of application. As much as we would like to have international students apply, there have been to many occasions where it's gone a little wrong.

We do still consdier those with a couple of years experience though so you could apply once you've got your PR.
Thanks for you interest in Orica

Hi Adele! I have been looking at the orica page in the unigrad book. I am a chemistry sudent and am interested in chemical engineering. Is this something that orica support? Also, are there any opportunities to travel with the graduate scheme?

Thanks!

Hi Esther, yes we have a number of Chemists at Orica, you're welcome to apply. The graduate program requires travel every 12 months as part of the rotation program (within Australia) and international rotations are on offer to our highest performers for the third year of the graduate program. Around 50% of our graduates get some form of international experience in the three years of their grad program

My question today is what is the level of involvement graduates will experience in their first year at Orica? By this I mean, will graduates work in the background of a project, or will we be exposed to clients and have a direct input and 'say' in the particular project?
Also, in a general sense, what will be our key responsibilities on a day to day basis?

Thanks

Hi Rianneten,
Great question. At the end of last year I ran a workshop with most of our graduates and asked them how they would describe the Orica Graduate Program and the majority said "Real". They said they were surprised at how much responsibility they were given from day 1. So to answer your question, you're given some of your own projects to take full ownership of and complete and then you also work on big projects with senior engineers to get an understanding of the bigger Orica picture. An example of things you could work on are;
Attend external training courses (pumps, hazop and project management)
Travel to Newcastle to visit mine sites, other Orica plants and attend conferences.
Attend external training courses (Apollo root cause analysis, instrument automation and control)
Provide plant and customer support
Travel to 2 customer mine sites

That example was taken directly from an overview of a first year Chemical Engineer's experience in his first year at a local Melbourne site

To give you a furhter indication of the type of work you will be doing, we have a three year graduate program with three different rotations. These could be in; Large scale manufacturing site, Research and Development, Commissioning work, Design, Project Management.

Why should I choose to apply with Orica? There are a lot of different companies out there. I like the look of Orica but I'm not sure of the benefits? Do you know how many exams I will have to sit to become fully qualified?

You should choose Orica if you're looking for a company that is growing fast, has exciting and forever new projects and isn't shy of giving graduates real responsibility. Our graduates get a lot of opportunity by way of exposure to projects, visbility in the business and three different roles in the three years. We develop your leadership skills as much as we do your technical skills so if you should choose Orica if you're looking for well rounded development. I'm not sure what you mean by how many exams you will have to sit? Can you clarify?

I'm studying chemical engineering and currently in my final year. I don't have any relevant work experience say vacation work or internship but I do have three years of experience in retail. Will not having relevant work experience is a great disadvantage in acquiring graduate position ??
