I'm interesting in applying for a graduate position at Audit Office Of NSW. I'm doing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New England. I also have had a cadetship with a reputable accounting firm for the last three years and other various extra curricular experience. I have only managed a credit average.
I was wondering if you guys prefer other universities i.e. Usyd/UNSW/Macquarie rather than a country university like University of New England? Also, does a cadetship give me a better chance at getting into the graduate program?

Hi Booney
Thanks for your interest in the Audit Office and for your questions.
We have no preferences for unis; we are looking for the best candidates regardless of where they have studied. We have employees from most universities in NSW including UNE.
Your cadetship is of some advantage to us and to you. We would expect you to be a quick learner and someone that would make very good progress within the Office. You would find it easier to settle in and adapt to the work. You would have also dealt with clients, worked in teams and interacted with people at different levels of your organisation.
There is nothing wrong with a credit average; this is a very good achievement given the other time commitments you have (work, extra curricular activities etc).
Regards
Gary

Hi Gary,
I am interested in the Audit graduate program. Can you explain a little about the interview process? I am going to apply - but nervous about an interview situation. Can you give me some advice on what kind of preparation I can do?
Thanks!

Hi Booney Sorry, one other thing; here's a link to our Guide to the Audit Office. It provides a lot of information about the organisation and the conditions our people work under. Link to AO GuideCheers Gary

Hi Shiela
Thanks for your interest in the Audit Office and for your questions.
There's no need to be nervous, we try our best to run a fairly relaxed interview process. We won't ask you technical questions, but will talk about things like teamwork, communication skills, client interaction, interest in audit and perhaps the Government sector. We would also expect you to know the basics about what the Audit Office does.
Regards, Gary
Gary

Hi Gary,
How good do you think your grad campaign is compared to other companies? Do you know what percentage of grads that start with you complete the scheme? Or how many are still with you after say 2 or 5 years.
I'm interested because I am going to be applying for a few different grad jobs - The Audit Office being one - and I have read that you can work out a lot from a company from the company’s staff retention rate.
Do you know the main reasons why people do leave the audit office. There are always reasons?
Thanks, Steve

Hi Gary & Sarah, I was wondering if the Audit office had a preference or requirement for it's graduate to undertake the CPA or CA Programs, my preference is the CPA Program as it feels more relevant to business, but thought that maybe the CA is more relevant to builing a career at the Audit Office.
Thanks

Just had a look at the "Link to AO Guide". It's really good that you show us this before we start.
I see that you accrue 15 days of sick leave a year. Is it normal to be allocated sick leave. What happens when you don't get sick? What happens if you are sick for more than 15 days (ie if the surfs good one summer!!)? - do you get sacked or just have unpaid sick leave?

Hi Booney
Sorry about the delay; I got timed out!! :-(
Please refer to post#8 plus we will be using some on-line assessment tools to assist with our shortlisting process. We then normally have a preliminary interview and if you are successful at that stage you would be then interviewed by members of our senior management team (they're not scary!!) who make the final decision.
Cheers
Gary

Hi Sarah and Gary,
My question is around what graduates usually do after the grad program with the Audit Office? What kind of positions do they head into?

Hi Steve
Sorry about the delay in replying; your questions around retention are quite detailed and the answers may contain information that is confidential. Therefore in this regard you are welcome to contact me by e-mail(gary.beer@audit.nsw.gov.au) and I will be happy to provide whatever information I can.
I note from other posts that you have or are studying mathematics. We require an a degree with a major in accounting.
Regarding your question on sick leave. This is not a right, it is an entitlement if you are sick. We have very strict rules around sick leave and monitor it very closely. Surfing is something you would be expected to undertake on the weekends, before or after work or on your annual leave. We are a professional services organisation and we would take a very dim view of someone who might consider surfing when they should be at work. If you are genuinely sick and run out of leave you would be on leave without pay and may qualify for Government sickness benefits.
Regards
Gary

Hi Nicole
You have a permanent position as a Financial Auditor from day one. After 12 months, provided you are performing well in your job and CA or CPA studies, you would begin your progression to higher auditor levels. Progression continues on a 12 monthly basis and when you have completed your CA or CPA studies you would become eligible for promotion to Senior Auditor and with more experience after that to Audit Leader and so on.
Our work is mainly in financial audit, but you do move around different teams with varied client portfolios (we have over 500 clients across most industries). There can also be opportunity for rotation into our Performance Audit, Information Systems Audit, Audit Support or Corporate Services areas.
Regards
Gary

Gary. The surfing comment was a joke! I thought that a mathematics graduate would be considered, but I'll look elsewhere. Thanks
