I have completed an IT degree and have been overseas until recently. I did some work experience for a company in Sydney – mainly user testing and help desk stuff. I really want to get onto an IT graduate program where I can develop into a systems engineer role. I’ve seen that the big cooperates are probably my best bet. Or only option?

Any advice would be great.

In a similar position but probably want to get into game programming. I know it's a competetive industry to get into and mainly opportunities arise in smaller more risky companies.

Does anyone know any good avenues to get a grad position in gaming or would it be best to get a grad program in a related field at one of the big boys?

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for the query! I would imagine that game design would be an awesome field to be in with all the great new games I see out there. I would recommend looking at the larger orgs or even government as they are a great place to start for a grad and then to move into more niche areas after a couple of years. You will get some excellent training and growth all while pursuing a passion.

Some great ones are IBM, Google, Microsoft, Accenture, Centrelink..Accenture are taking on HEAPS of IT grads next month and their Grad Recruitment Lead is on our forums this Thursday. That said, most niche companies while likely to be looking to employ someone with experience would be keen to train and get someone in who is fresh and young. Aristocrat had a posting on our site for the month of July looking for a game designer so you may want to start there for the niche market. There applications closed on July 30th but they may make an exception for you or have other roles available. Make sure to let them know where you heard it!

Get in touch with Jeanette Jones there on 02 9013 6866 to see what they have on offer!

Cheers,

Adam

Hi There,

Hum its a good choice. Nowadays Computer game developers are getting huge money by just working 3 weeks in a month. I know one who have completed his graduation on Computer engineering and now working in an UK game studio and earning 15000P per month!! That is really very smart. Here is a website Academic Jobs by browsing this site u will be able to see how many game related jobs are available now at USA, Europe and Australia. However to be a Game developer All u need hard work and study. Just ask uncle google about game programming languages and also softwars. Get some skills and then surely u can do some very good money maker jobs indeed.. ;)

Enhancing of what you've learned is what we want. Working to the industry you don't want to be in, i think is the hardest part as a working man.

It’s important to be clear what you want to do. On the Victorian Government grad program a couple of years ago some graduates went on one of two paths. One was in the IMT area of the business and the other was infrastructure and support. It turned out that at the end of the graduate year the infrastructure areas (with graduates) were transferred to new government agency specialising only in hosting and supporting applications. This was fine for most of the graduates but one or two did not want to go and preferred to stay with the department of their original choice. So be clear about career direction during often significant change. If you end up in a position that is not suited to you it may mean you don't have a chance to prove what you a capable of. Otherwise you might still be on graduate pay after two or three years.
