Graduate Career Tips: After the Interview
When it comes to getting your graduate career underway, securing an interview is a great first step. Yet, applying for a job doesn't end there – and it's not all in your potential employer's hands, as you might think. There are several things you can do to maximise your chances of landing a position:
-
Say thanks! Send an email thanking the interviewer for their time and let them know that you'd be more than happy to answer any questions if they have them. This will indicate you're keen for the graduate position, and will keep your details top of mind. If you don't have access to email, send a handwritten or typewritten note with a handwritten signature.
-
Clarify things. If there was an area of the interview that you feel was a little weak, or which didn't go as well as you planned, mention that you've had more of a chance to think about this area and provide a quick explanation of your experience or perspective on that point.
-
Wait for the interviewer to contact you. In the interview, your interviewer may have mentioned that they would be in touch in a specific timeframe (for instance, within a week). Note this in your diary, and don't contact them until after this date. You don't want a potential employer to feel harassed or hassled. However, a reminder call a few days after they said they would contact you can sometimes remind them that they need to take action.
