Graduate Career Tips: Before the Interview

So you've landed an interview – well done! Now what?

Before you head out the door to your interview, here are a few golden rules to follow to increase your chances of securing that post graduate job:

  1. Know where the interview is
  2. Plan to arrive early
Arrive early so you can take a few deep breaths before the interview and go through your notes and the questions in your head. It can be a good idea to arrive at your destination half an hour early, and then go to a nearby cafe for a coffee beforehand. Always try to arrive five minutes before you're asked to be there so your employer knows you're punctual.
  3. Do your research
Graduate employees are often judged on their enthusiasm levels, so learn as much about the company as you can by checking out their website, reading the newspaper or doing an internet search. Ask friends or family about the company and what they think of them. Also, do your best to stay up to date with current events in the days leading up to an interview. Sometimes, interviewers will ask you questions about current affairs – specifically ones that relate to the field in which you're being interviewed.
  4. Prepare any props
Sometimes, you'll be asked to bring material to the interview, such as a portfolio or a presentation. Always ask the interviewer beforehand if there's anything they would like you to bring along. If so, check it's neatly packed and ready to go. If you need your computer, double-check it's charged or that you have your battery pack with you.
  5. Check who you'll be meeting with
It can be a little daunting if you arrive at a meeting expecting one interviewer and end up facing an entire team. So, always ask who you'll be meeting with and run through their names beforehand. Try to do your research and work out what roles they have in the company. Similarly, be sure to ask if the interview will be an individual or a group one.
  6. Ask if there will be a test
Some companies may ask you to do a psychometric test. This often happens only in latter interviews (not typically in a first interview), though it could pay to be prepared by asking the interviewer or the recruiter if this will be happening.
