Interviewing for Graduates: Sample Questions

Don't worry, Everyone gets nervous in interviews. And not just people seeking graduate careers. No matter how much experience you have, or how many interviews you've been for, it's safe to say that the whole interview process can be a little daunting.

When it comes to beating your nerves, it's essential to prepare. In fact, it often helps to prepare a list of questions and answers, and run through these beforehand so that you feel confident and ready to go. It might also help to review them with a friend, sibling or one of your parents. Get them to ask you a question, and practice how you would answer.

Here are some sample questions that you should practice when going for graduate jobs:

  • Why are you interested in this job?
  • Why do you want to work for this company in particular?
  • Tell me more about your University/TAFE/College degree. How do you feel it prepared you for this role?
  • Tell me more about your previous employment at XX.
  • Give me an example of how you've faced a difficult situation in the past with a colleague, and how you've overcome it.
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • What are your specific goals with regards to this role?
  • What can you offer that's unique?
  • Have you worked in a team environment before? How did you find it?
  • Do you work well under pressure? Give an example.
  • What are your greatest accomplishments?

You might also want to think about the following points:

  • What skills does this job require – and do you have them?
  • Why should this employer hire you?
  • What experience can you draw upon to help you in this role?

And, lastly, you might want to come up with some questions of your own for your employer. This will show that you're interested in the company, and will also give you a chance to take a break from answering questions for a moment.

For example:

  • What career growth opportunities do you provide?
  • Would I be working within a team? If so, would you need me to meet any of the team before starting?
  • What's the culture like here?
  • Why do you like working here?
